“After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.”

Music is the most beautiful, powerful and inspirational language in the world. Forever changing, forever evolving, it’s like life itself. Each melody reminds us of a timeless moment we cherish or a deceptive illusion we create. Either way, these memories move us and set us free. No matter what our age is or what culture we’re from, music is something that has wound its way into our day to day lives. Simply put, it’s a tool of expression.

It helps us express our emotions and feelings. If this ‘tool’ is used correctly, it can be the epitome of creativity.

The songs on the top charts are fun and upbeat, but filled with vulgarity. They glamorize alcohol, drugs, sex and the like. Now I’m not going to go on about how today’s generation is influenced by celebrities and the media and such, but I just want to say that those kinds of songs can’t really be defined as music.

Sure, it’s got a melody, it’s got a rhythm… But are there any genuine feelings or emotions? There’s no truth, no feeling… It’s all being recorded and produced for the money. Music is something real, something close to your heart. It’s derived out of love and passion. The lyrics of a song should be able to evoke so much emotion, be it happiness or sorrow. I can’t say it better than E. Y. Harburg. “Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.”

So what is music? Well, according to Yanni, “The recording of a piece of music is like a still photograph of the ocean. It’s like looking at it frozen in time. Music is not like that. In real life music is liquid.” I agree with Yanni, an artist whose instrumental music has touched my soul, but I’d like to add a personal note: There are difficult times that come our way and yes, we do stumble and succumb to the trouble and stress. We seek to get away from all the anger and anxiety. Some people drink, do drugs or take the seemingly ‘easier way out’, and not only hurt themselves, but others, in the process. Others, including me, listen to music that inspires and helps us make it through. When I feel alone, I often convey my feelings by writing. Sometimes however, when words fail, music speaks. Singing takes me to another world; I concentrate on each note, the beat, and meaning, rather than my worries.

It’s impossible to imagine a world without music. It’s a religion without any rules or restrictions. We’re all connected by this unique ‘tool’ that binds us together as one. Music is something you can always depend on.

There will always be a song that that sings your tale, something you can relate to… And if it’s unwritten… well, it’s up to you to write it.
